International Sauvignon Blanc Day May 3rd…

Intermational Sauvignon Blanc Day celebrates a grape grown all over the world

Friday May 3rd is International Sauvignon Blanc Day, so I thought I would tell you about a couple of Sauvignon Blancs I have tasted recently and to give you time to get them in for a celebration on Friday. One of the most popular of South African Whites in Restaurants and ‘by the glassers’, I have found there is great love for Sauvignon Blanc in Gauteng.

Asara The Vineyard Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2018
Harvested in several passes, the wine shows the greenness of harvesting in the early part of the ideal ripening window and the tropical fruits and creaminess.  There is a golden thread of acidity and freshness running through the wine from entry through the generous citrus flavoured mid palate and finishing in a crisp dry lime aftertaste.

Jordan ‘Cold Fact’ Sauvignon Blanc 2018
Jordan’s other Sauvignon Blanc, the Outlier, is matured in oak. This one is untrammelled by oak and has blackcurrant whiffs and flavours, figs, melon and citrus.  The crisp freshness and long finish have an undertow of scrunched fynbos herbs.

Nuy Sauvignon Blanc 2017
You’ll find the 2018 vintage on the shelves by now I would think. If you have not tried a Nuy Wine before, I really must ask you to land a bottle of two. I have been a fan of their wines  since the early 1980s. This is a simple uncomplicated wine. A good harmonious mélange of the grapes green qualities, figs, asparagus, peas and the tropical notes of ripe white fleshed peach and melon and the ever present sweet tropical limes. Excellent note of freshness running through from entry to the long finish.

Zevenwacht 360 Sauvignon Blanc 2018
From the hills of Bottelary, a really statuesque Sauvignon. Elegantly packaged and liveried. The aromas are of scrunched nettles, granadilla and a wonderful grapefruit skin oil, these are carried through to the generous mid-palate into the long aftertaste which are supported by limey lemony flavours.

Bellingham The Homestead Sauvignon Blanc 2018
An award winning wine – just packed with wonderful Sauvignon flavours. In the glass, a pale straw in colour with youthful lime green flashes. The aromas are soft with ripe green winter melon, and sappy pears with a strong undertow of citrus which, on entry fills the palate together with delicious mango and desiccated pineapple. The ending is crisp, clean and refreshing.
