Desiderius Pongrácz 2009, a wine to honour Pongrácz

Desiderius Pongrácz and friends

I was fortunate to know Desiderius Pongrácz and his herd of little dachshunds which went everywhere with him. He helped so many young winemakers with advice on planting and all manner of winemaking techniques.

The Cap Classique wines named for him are well known and achieve compliments and awards from local and in International competitions.

Desiderius Pongrácz 2009

Since the Desiderius Pongrácz 2008 ranked as the only South African Top 10 contender at the prestigious 2015 Effervescents du Monde competition in France alongside the world’s finest, sparkling wine lovers near and far have had high hopes for the 2009 vintage changeover of Pongrácz’s flagship Méthode Cap Classique.

According to cellar manager and winemaker, Elunda Basson, despite the bar having been set exceptionally high after Desiderius 2008 was met with rave reviews, 2009 has delivered what promises to be a spectacular vintage year. “With 2009 having been noted as one of the healthiest and best harvests for South African winemakers, we believe that we have a notable platform to work on for a superior vintage offering.”

Elunda Basson

Handcrafted in a uniquely-styled fluted bottle that epitomises elegance, quality and nobility, Elunda says that the magnificent Cap Classique encapsulates grace and exceptional character. “A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir crafted in the classic French tradition, but harvested proudly on South African soil, this vintage spent a minimum of four years on the lees (spent yeast cells) before the sediment was removed by the time-honoured method of ‘remuage’ and ‘degorgement’.”

Chardonnay Grapes

Elunda adds that this prestige Cuvée is the ultimate pairing with bitter dark chocolate, duck liver parfait and Orange Blossom scented petit fours. “It is alluring with a rich complexity and a slight green tint that teems with lively bubbles. Nuances of fresh fruit, almonds and rich buttery bread, delight the senses.”

Desiderius Pongrácz 2009 is available at top wine outlets and boutique wine shops.
