I have twice visited Oporto in Northern Portugal, at the mouth of the Douro River which runs west to The Atlantic Ocean from the Spanish Border. On my last trip I met David Guimaraens, sixth generation Port Maker for the Fladgate Group. We had a truly interesting Port tasting, including his first Organic Port. I learnt so much with this tasting. David asked me “to whom do you think we sell most of our Port?” “The UK” I said. “No” was his answer. “France.” I discovered that the French love Port and drink it as an aperitif, a digestif, and with tonic water as a Summer Cooler.
De Krans Wine Estate in Calitzdorp
De Krans Wine Estate in Calitzdorp is a premier wine Estate and it makes a truly impressive range of Port Style and other wines, most of which are vegan, including the first Pink Port Style Wine. Now Boets Nel and his cellar team have produced the first De Krans Premium P&T as the first and only port-style wine and tonic in South Africa.
Pour
From a clear glass bottle. They come in handy four packs. Chill it well and you have a perfect ready to drink Cocktail. Palate lifting bubbles, it boasts all the flavours you would expect from a port style Cape White and tonic. The passion fruit, desiccated pineapple, and a squirt of citrus blend so well with the slight bitterness of the Tonic. A bright line of acidity runs through it from entry to the aftertaste, counter-balanced by the residual sugar of the Cape White.
Pair
Excellent as a Summer Cooler with a slice of lemon and lots of ice. Perfect with a plate of fat round cured olives and some spicy roasted nuts.
