Asara Wine Estate appoints Johan Joubert as Cellarmaster…

Johan Joubert, Asara Wine Estate Cellarmaster

In a happy and important move, Asara Wine Estate and Luxury Hotel has appointed Johan Joubert as Cellarmaster with effect from today. Johan has been consulting for Asara for the last two years and has travelled with Estate Manager Peter Gottgens and Winery Marketing and Sales Manager Samantha Wiid to the Major International Wine Exhibitions such as Prowein in Germany. He has also assisted the Winery Team with blending and preparing wines for bottling. Janette van Lill and Christiaan Nigrini as assistant winemakers will be part of his support team.

Johan Joubert grew up on his family wine farm in Bonnievale and with his father as mentor, grew up with the motto that “if you work hard for things in life, you will appreciate them more”. Pruning during the holidays with the vineyard workers on their wine farm, he fell in love with the grapevine.

The General Smuts Trophy

Having successfully completed his 3-year Cellar Technology Diploma in winemaking at Elsenburg, Johan made a Muratie 1995 Cabernet which earned him the title of being the youngest winemaker to win the General Smuts Trophy. A further highlight in his career was winning the 2001 Robert Mondavi Trophy for International Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in Bordeaux. Johan, a member of the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild, always stays humble in his approach and believes that the wine has to do the talking.

Johan Joubert in Vineyard

Johan, having had experience both at Boland Cellar and the Kleine Zalze Estate is a seasoned award-winning winemaker. His great knowledge of Vineyard practices, both soils and vines, ensures the best of grapes being delivered to the Cellar.

Johan has been working with Asara’s Wine, Vineyards, Cellar and Sales Teams on a forward-looking vineyard plan for the Estate which will involve new plantings, some in new areas and others replanting old vineyards whose time has come. The uncultivated land surrounding the vineyards are being rid of alien flora to return it to the traditional fynbos as part of this upgrading. Clearing alien bush encourages birds and indigenous animals and reptiles to return.

We wish Johan continued success in the years ahead and to tasting his wines from the 2018 vintage.
