In the 1980s I spoke to a revered Paarl Wine Estate Owner and I asked him if he could start all over again what would he do. He said he would buy a small vineyard in Constantia, plant one vine variety and make small batches of excellent wine. This was in the pre-Sauvignon Blanc Chardonnay days. This is exactly what Lynn and Don Rowand did on their property, Nova Zonnestraal on the western side of the highway through Constantia. They chose Roger Burton as their winemaker. Roger was fast out of the starting blocks when they released their first vintage and as the vines have aged and he has got to know the vineyards better, the wine has just leapt into the stratosphere with each passing vintage.

My comments on an earlier vintage
“The most perfect food wine. Classical bright Sauvignon fruits, crisp starfruit, ripe sappy kiwi and sweet tropical lime. Lovely single thread of acidity running through from entry to aftertaste. Perfect balance on either side of it.
Refreshing, appetite awakening, zippy, complementary to a good dish, well cooked. Excellent step up from the 2015, awarded a worthy 4 and a half stars in Platters Guide.”
