A letter from Jenny le Roux, doyenne of fashion in South Africa….

Jenny le Roux

I had Habits for 35 glorious years – I took it from working solo in a small room in Claremont to where it is today. Countless awards, top notch fashion shows, a huge staff, a factory and an award-winning online store, plus an export business. Not to mention being one of the first to introduce Trunk Shows to Johannesburg – it was an idea I nabbed from Donna Karan who used to hold them in New York. To be honest in the beginning over 25 years ago the Trunk Shows were trial and error (what I would call a dog show!!). My right hand man at the time Sherryl Castle-Ross and self lugging luggage, too many customers and not enough clothes – but I finally got it into the smooth operation it is today.

Who would ever have thought that what started as a bit of fashion fun would take over my life, and take over my life it did. I concentrated on not just what woman wanted but for what worked for them. I have to thank not just my exceptional staff I’ve had over the years but all the amazing customers for the success Habits is today.

It was fun, no two days were alike, loads of laughter and I met the most wonderful people. So sad to say good-bye to an excellent team headed by the new owner Mandy Tinkler. I took what I intended was to be a gap year, but due to this strange virus it’s taken longer to get my act together. I miss it every day it was my third child.

Now I’m embarking on something completely different – a monthly “must have” item from my new label Jlr by Jenny le Roux. They will be luxury classics with tips on how to wear, all made locally of course.

So, it’s done a full circle back to working solo, a new adventure.
