Zevenwacht The Tin Mine 2014
I love it when a wine Estate, like Zevenwacht, names one of its wines with an historical name that has something to do with the farm itself or the region. The Zevenwacht The Tin Mine 2014 is a red Rhone style wine named for a Tin Mine which operated on the slopes of the estate in the early 20th century. There was also a tin mine in Vredehoek in Cape Town.
Shiraz, ripening on the vine
The grapes used for this wine are drawn from the Zevenwacht Home Vineyard on the estate. A blend by Jacques Viljoen, the Winemaker on the estate, of 52% Shiraz, 42% Grenache Noir and 6% Merlot, the vineyards are set on the slopes of the Polkadraai Hills just north of the coastline of False Bay. Cooling breezes off the sea ameliorate the summer heat in the vineyards and allow for alonger hang time and slower ripening. This results in better flavours and colour from the grapes. The three varieties are separately vinified in open topped fermenting tanks with regular punch downs which help with the extraction of colour and the softer tannins. Once fermented, the mash was pressed and the wine was taken to a mix of prefilled 500 litre barrels, 2nd 3rd and 4th fill for a period from 12 to 16 months. Blending and preparation for bottling took place after maturation.

It looks like
Very elegant black labelled Bordeaux shaped bottle. In the glass, a deep ruby at the core paling to purple garnet at the rim.
It smells like
A bunch of violets. Some fat Agen prunes, oak and its concomitant spices.
It tastes like
Full generously fruited. Plummy. Some dark berries brought to life by red currant and snappy dark chocolate. Full palate, excellent soft mouthfeel which gently wanes in a long well balanced aftertaste – fruit, acidity, tannins and oak all singing off the same hymn sheet.
