With its biodynamic heritage and sublime coastal terroir Waterkloof Estate in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation, has recently released its Waterkloof Circle of Life White 2016. A perfect expression of the biodynamic approach to their vineyards and the gentle hand of Nadia Barnard-Langenegger, the Estate’s Winemaker, in the Winery. The wine is only released in selected years, when integration of its components shines brightest. The vineyards are on fynbos covered hills of the Schapenberg overlooking False Bay from whence cooling breezes come ameliorating the Summer heat.
The wine is only released in years when all the elements come together. “The Circle of Life White 2016 is intriguing,” Waterkloof winemaker Nadia Barnard-Langenegger writes in her assessment. “Its Sauvignon Blanc character is prominent on the nose, with beautiful aromatics of lime and gooseberry. On the palate, the wine shows a lovely, fresh acidity and thorough integration. The Chenin Blanc reveals itself in a tight mineral core and creamy mid-palate – the backdrop for great complexity and a persistent finish.” The blend for 2016 comprises 67% Sauvignon Blanc, 29% Chenin Blanc and 4% Semillon.
Hand harvesting is done in the cool of early morning, with strict fruit selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar. 2016 was the first harvest the Waterkloof team made use of a new Coquard Press. Its gentle press cycle makes it renowned as the best way of extracting juice to ensure purity – an essential component in Waterkloof winemaking philosophy. During vinification of the Circle of Life White, a combination of old 600 litre barrels and concrete “eggs” were utilised. The wine is made by natural, co-fermentation of the two principal grape varieties in the blend – Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. A policy of laying on the lees and then maturing in the bottle ensures drinkability immediately though the wine will age well if cool cellared for a couple of years.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap and dressed in fine livery. In the glass the wine is a buttery yellow. The aromas are rich, and citrus fruited with a deeply mineral pleasantness. From entry, you know you are n to a good thing. Lovely thread of acidity running through the generous mid palate, as if it was a vaulted ceiling. The aftertastes is at one refreshing, long and wanes gently. This is a serious wine.
Very much a food wine the Waterkloof Circle of Life White 2016 will tackle most conventional ‘white wine dishes’ but will happily go on to take on game birds, belly of pork and seafood, sushi and ceviche.
