The Vineyards Vineyard at dawn
You may not know, that The Vineyard Hotel in Claremont, Cape Town, has its own vineyard down on the banks of the Liesbeek River. Would be so interesting to know the Wine Appellation into which it falls.

The current The Vineyard Hotel main building was built by Captain Andrew Barnard who was the Colonial Secretary at the Cape and his wife, Lady Ann Barnard. A consummate hostess and traveller, Lady Ann’s diaries are a great insight into the lives of the settlers in the early 19th Century. The property they bought was originally called Wingerd, Dutch for Vineyard.
Happiness in the rows
The hotel’s vineyard was harvested this week and the grapes, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc were taken to Simonsig Wine Estate where owner Cellarmaster Johan Malan started vinifying them. The wine will be bottled and kept for release on a future occasion.

The Vineyard Hotel is well worth a visit for its lovely gardens, and its giant tortoises. You can also take a walk down to the Vineyard’s Vineyard and enjoy breakfast, tea, lunches and high tea while you’re there.
