The Vineyard Hotel, with its history going back to the beginning of the 19th Century when it was inhabited by Lady Anne Barnard, wife of Andrew Barnard, Colonial Secretary at The Cape of Good Hope, is a busy vibrant hotel owned by The Petousis Family. All manner of activities take place there, it is a special place to visit. And one of the most welcoming – one of the reasons it has so many regular ‘locals’.
Here is the ‘day in the life’ of one of Cape Town’s most charming hotels.
If you are a quick ‘Continental’ breakfast person, The Long Café is the place for you. Of the finest coffee in town and a brilliant selection of bakes.
Should you prefer a ‘full breakfast’ of the Cooked Eggs, bacon and sausages kind, The Square will provide you with all you desire.
Meantime things are going on and people are getting busy. CEO Lex Petousis, of the family which owns the hotel is busy with staff training.
Chefs Luvuyo and Gabrielle set off for a Food Show where they will demonstrate some of the hotel’s delicacies to the visitors.
If it’s Monday, it’s Sip & Sample day where complimentary producer led wine tastings take place in the Garden Lounge from 18h00. Certainly a way to meet a range of wines you would normally not have the opportunity to taste. And the added bonus of having someone from the producer being there to answer your questions.
At lunch time there are two options, one is The Square where an a la carte menu is presented and you would find a dish like this.
Regular Wine Dinners are held featuring the wines of a single producer. Here Roy Davies and Arco Laarman Winemaker at Glen Carlou discussing dishes and choices put forward by Executive Chef Carl van Rooyen for a Glen Carlou Dinner during which Arco will present his wines. These dinners are held once a month.
The Vineyard also serves High Tea each day for which they are renowned. Executive Chef Carl van Rooyen is seen here talking to presenters on a TV show before filming.
The Garden Lounge which has interior and exterior, and when the weather is good sitting under the trees lunching on possibly the best Fried Hake and Chips in Town, in the company of some of the hotel’s more renowned guests, the tortoises.
Things to do before you leave? Do have a look at the hotel’s Sauvignon Blanc Vineyard down on the bank of the Liesbeeck River. Each year one of the Vineyard’s 5 Wine Partners makes the wine from this vineyard. This year Kevin Arnold from Waterford Estate is making the wine.
The Vineyard is also decorated with some amazing panels by Esias Bosch, well known South African Ceramicist and friend of the Petousis Family. Well worth taking a stroll round the passages to see these.
A busy vibrant yet peaceful oasis in the heart of the suburbs.
Oh, and the view of the Table Mountain Massif is spectacular.
