The Minotaur – a new red blend from Doolhof [Afrikaans for Labyrinth] was released on October 1st and on Saturday 10th won a double gold at the Veritas Awards dinner. It already has a gold medal from this year’s Michelangelo awards.
There are some quite exciting wines coming from this little winery in Wellington, named for the mountains surrounding it which the early inhabitants likened to a Labyrinth.
The enchanting Dark Lady if the Labyrinth was a recent release, one of the new stable of popular coffee mocha Pinotages with lashings of red berries, an undertow of almonds and ready for early drinking.
The Minotaur is a blend of four of the Bordeaux, varietals with Shiraz and Pinotage, deep and dark red in colour with the expected Bordelaise tones of blackcurrant and an elegant undertow of mint. It is a gutsy wine with the tannins well integrated with the fruit and the effects of 14 months aging in French oak barrels.
Wonderful drinking now – though it needs a leg of lamb butterflied of the braai to show it off really well.
