My family and I were so lucky to visit Delaire Graff Wine Estate, atop the Banghoek Valley in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation, in the week before Christmas. Here we had a comprehensive wine tasting of the Estate’s current wines with Johann Laubser, Estate General Manager and Riaan Schemper, the Assistant Winemaker on the Estate. The wines included their recent release The Banghoek, a sublime red which hits the ground sprinting at R1600.00 a pop. One of the gems for me was the Delaire Graaf Sauvignon Blanc 2019. We had an ambrosial lunch at the Delaire Graff Restaurant with one of the truly great views in the Winelands.
I brought a bottle back to Johannesburg to present to John Fraser, Owner of ZA Confidential.com, a business website which also covers wine, restaurants – subscribe below please. The tasting team with us was Brand Finance’s Jeremy Sampson, Cova Advisory’s Duane Newman, Ian Cruickshanks from the SA Institute of Race Relations and Clientele’s Malcolm MacDonald. Malcolm, being an IT Director for his company, does all the technical stuff for us. There was also a chat about foreign investment in SA wine. Good or bad?
While you are out purchasing a bottle [or two] of this wine, do look out for the Delaire Graff Coastal Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc 2019. Grapes come from Durbanville, Stellenbosch, Darling and Franschhoek. The wine is full of tropical fruit aromas with layers of blackcurrant, gooseberry and nettles. Beautiful balance in the layers, the long and gently waning aftertaste has the support of a concentration of fruit and refreshing, zingy acidity.
