Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Satin Nectar 2017

Frans Malan, founder, with his wife Lisa, of Simonsig Wine Estate in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation, was an enthusiastic pioneer.  He seemed to have a fire in him that just led him on to bigger and better things. First bottler of Estate made Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. First maker of what is now known as Méthode Cape Classique, a wine made in the Champagne style with a second fermentation in the bottle. Kaapse Vonkel was a triumph and spawned a number of similar products. Frans once told me that he hoped that Kaapse Vonkel would be the name given to the MCC style of wine. Pioneering is not something they teach at University. Yet both his sons, Francois, the Vineyardist and Johan the Cellarmaster continue with this tradition that seems built into their DNA. And Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Satin Nectar 2017 is the latest in their series of exciting wines.  Kaapse Vonkel was followed by the Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé, the Cuvée Royale and the Kaapse Vonkel Demi Sec. And now the Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Satin Nectar 2017

Pinot Meunier, the minor grape in this wine

The blend of the grapes in the Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Satin Nectar 2017 is the three classic Champagne grapes in the following volumes, Chardonnay 55%, Pinot Noir 44%, and the 1% balance is made up of Pinot Meunier, the second black grape of Champagne.

Made in the midst of the worst Western Cape drought in living memory, the grapes were of outstanding quality and fruit intensity. Whole bunch pressed to collect the finest juice, or cuvée. After two days of cool settling, the wines were separately vinified, the Chardonnay was fermented in previous fill French oak barrels. No malolactic fermentation took place so that the freshness of the wine was preserved. The wines were then blended and bottled with the shot of sugar and yeast and closed with a crown cork for later disgorgement. The champagne cork was inserted, the wire muzzle and the label dressing.

From a classical Champagne shaped bottle, closed under natural cork and a wire muzzle. Elegantly liveried showing its stature.  In the glass, the wine is a pale gold, and gem bright with strings of the tiniest bubbles rushing to the surface and delivering the most tempting of aromas. Poached quince, marzipan, ripe white fleshed peaches, Granny Smith apples and waxy honeycomb follow through on the generous off dry to demi sec palate. The crisp acidity and the bubbles adding to the allure. The Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Satin Nectar 2017 is ready for drinking now.
