What a privilege to pop the cork of this fine bubbly, the Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Methode Cap Classique Brut 2016, first ever in South Africa using the Champagne method of a second fermentation in the bottle. I was in at the very beginning, when Frans Malan was experimenting. His sons Francois, Vineyardist and Johan, Production Director, now follow in their father’s footsteps, still pioneering and making fine wine.
Johan Fraser, of ZA Confidential, presented the programme, Our team in the Studio was Debi van Flymen, a Cape Wine Master and Purveyor of Fine Wines, South Africa’s leading branding expert, Jeremy Sampson, Economist Chris Hart and Malcolm McDonald of Clientele. Malcolm kindly assisted with his technical expertise with the recordings.
After the wine chats, John led a discussion into the way restaurant wine mark-ups can leave a nasty taste in the mouth.
