Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Demi Sec 2015
Simonsig, the pioneering Stellenbosch Wine Appellation Estate, this year celebrates its 50th year as a wine producing estate. Way back, before there were hardly any wine estates bottling their own wine. Chenin Blanc and Pinotage were early bottlings. And then along came Kaapse Vonkel. The late Frans Malan in the early 1970s pioneered this Champagne style wine, characterised by its second fermentation in the bottle, which became known as Méthode Cap Classique. The third iteration of this range, The Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Demi Sec 2015, was released towards the end of last year, following on the original Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut and the later Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé.
The wine is a classic blend of the three noble Champagne Grapes Chardonnay 48%, Pinot Noir 49% and the lesser known black grape Pinot Meunier 3%. The 2015 was a year described by the Estate as “one for the books.” The grapes were gently whole bunch pressed and the juice extracted is known as cuvée. This is the juice that is fermented in stainless steel tanks to produce the base wine. A component of the Chardonnay was matured in previous fill French oak barrels to add complexity to wine. No malolactic fermentation took place which left the wine fresh and crisp. The wine was then prepared for disgorgement, the adding of the liqueur, applying both the natural cork closure and the wire muzzle.
It looks like
Bottled in a traditional Champagne shaped bottle. Elegant yellow label in the classical Simonsig style. In the glass, it is a delicate golden colour with masses of bubbles rushing headlong to the surface where they form a crown around the edge of the glass.
It smells like
White summer flowers, baked apple, ripe stone fruit like peaches and nectarines. Prickly bubble.
It tastes like
From entry, a rich sweetness mellowed by the crisp acidity. The flavours are enhanced by the lightest and most delicate bubbles. Beautiful balance, the baked apple with slices of fresh Granny Smith and a honeyed sweetness.
It‘s good with
New here’s a surprise. Just great with a Baked Brie and green fig preserve. Nina Timm’s Passionfruit Cheesecake Slices make a fabulous partner. Click here for her recipe.
