Innovators and pioneers in the wine industry more than most, Simonsig Wine Estate in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation launched its first bottled Chenin Blanc in 1968. Frans Malan’s greatest contribution to the South African Wine Industry was that not long thereafter the first ever Champagne style wine, The Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel was made. There continue to be innovations, the latest one of which is a truly handsome bottle for the Simonsig Chenin Blanc 2016.

Very dry weather leading up to the harvest lead to a slightly larger production interestingly as others suffered bigger losses.  The grapes were in perfect condition and the harvesting was an interesting challenge to get all the grapes in during the ideal ripening window.

The grapes were hand harvested destemmed and crushed.  Some of the components were allow overnight skin contact.  The juices were settled to a gem bright clarity and inoculated with a yeast known for its ability to produce fruity wines.  Slow cool fermentation followed and the wines were then blended and prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Brilliant Burgundy shaped bottle with glass embossing on the front and back and under screw cap. Very elegant new look label. In the glass crystal clear pale straw with lime green flashes.

It smells like
A mélange of tropical fruits, very beguiling.

It tastes like
Fully flavours of guava and piel de sabo melon. Lovely citrus thread running through it. A wine that over delivers in every respect – great bang for your buck.

It’s good with
Lovely glass on its own. Perfect pre-prandial drink. It is a food wine which can cope with a whole spectrum of foods.
