Peter Falke Signature Syrah 2015, try it with Nadia Graves’s Beef Short Ribs in Red Wine & Port…

Peter Falke Signature Syrah 2015

Up amongst the most famous strawberries of Stellenbosch on Annandale Road in the foothills of the Helderberg lies Groenvlei Farm. Groenvlei is the home of Peter Falke Wines. Perfectly situated for making fine wine, the buildings are stark white Cape Dutch in style with masses of purple bougainvillea tumbling helter skelter down the walls. The vineyards which are planted to a variety of the classic wine making grapes are perfectly maintained by Werner Schrenk, the farm’s GM and Winemaker.

Syrah grapes arriving at the cellar

The Groenvlei vineyards produced in 2015 superb quality grapes in what most serious winemakers describe as one of the best harvests of the century. The finest Syrah grapes on the estate were harvested for the Peter Falke Signature Syrah 2015. The harvesting team select the bunches in the vineyard ensuring no unripe or sunburnt grapes go further in the winemaking process. In the cellar the bunches are then further inspected before being destemmed and crushed for the fermentation process. Gentle handling during fermentation meant the extraction of Syrah’s fabulous colour, aromas and flavours. Maturation took place in a mix of first second and third fill French oak barrels for 18 months. The wine was then prepared for bottling.

What better way to enjoy a good bottle of Peter Falke Wine!

It looks like
Bottled in a Bordeaux shaped bottle under natural cork with the classic Peter Falke elegant label. In the glass, a deep prune plum red purple which pales out to garnet at the edges.

It smells like
You get Syrah’s wonderful spiced plums, Morello cherries, supported by and not overpowered by well applied oak.

It tastes like
Rich full and round from entry with a broad mid palate filled with a generosity of dark fruits, delicately spiced with sweet brown spices and the softest of tannin presence.

It’s good with
As a glass on its own, it is perhaps best taken after a good meal while involved in serious conversation about rugby scores and a bar of snappy dark chocolate. As an accompaniment to almost any meat or game bird dish, it is a good partner. Also, to lusty Vegetarian main course. Nadia Graves’s Beef Short Ribs in Red Wine and Port is the perfect counterfoil to this wine, click here for her recipe.
