Peter Falke Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural vineyard crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc which occurred in the vineyards of Bordeaux in the late 1600s. This ‘King of Reds’ has found a place on Groenvlei Farm in the foothills of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellations Helderberg Mountains. The Peter Falke Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 was recently released, another jewel in the Pater Falke crown. One of the Estate’s most awarded wines, it is a true expression of the place, the soil, the microclimate, the cooling breezes off False Bay ameliorating the summer heat. It is also a fingerprint of the 2015 harvest, lauded by many as one of the great of the century.

“The PF Cabernet Sauvignon is our most awarded wine, consistently achieving local and international recognition vintage after vintage,” says Peter Falke winemaker, Werner Schrenk. “Stellenbosch is the home of Cabernet in South Africa and it’s extremely rewarding to work with the varietal at our estate. Cabernet is always itself. It’s unpretentious, easy to understand and beautiful.”
Only the best bunches of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were harvested in 2015 vintage, from which a total of 7,000 bottles were produced. Hand selection of berries in the cellar ensures that only the best grapes go through for the final fermentation.  Once destalked and crushed, fermentation takes place and the wine was aged in a combination of first, second and third fill French Oak barrels. It was then prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Bottled under natural cork in a Bordeaux shaped bottle with the elegant Peter Falke red livery. In the glass, it is a deep bloodplum red at the core which pales out to ruby garnet at the edges.

It smells like
Rich blackcurrants and blueberries. Undertow of supportive well managed oak.

It tastes like
From entry a mouth filler with a golden thread of fine acidity running through it. Packed with berries, Palma violets, plums in the mid palate which join gentle tannins in a ricj and satisfying aftertaste. Lovely wine.

Drinking a glass of this at Peter Falke’s outside lounge at sundown is about the most perfect way to drink this wine.
