Perdeberg Winery Brut Reserve Methode Cap Classique Chenin Blanc
Perdeberg Winery in the lower slopes of the Perdeberg in Paarl, is known, not for nothing as The Home of Chenin Blanc. Albertus Louw and his cellar team make real magic with this amazing wine grape.
Not only for a special occasion, a midweek wine with something suitable for supper is a perfect time for opening a bottle of Perdeberg Brut Reserve MCC Chenin Blanc.
Made by the traditional Champagne method of a second fermentation in the bottle it is a fine example of the remarkable diversity of this grape.
The Perdeberg Chenin Blanc Range
It looks like
Packed in a traditional Champagne bottle with an elegant brown label. In the glass it is pale straw with green flashes midst the myriad of tiny bubbles rushing to the surface.
It smells like
Mixed windfall citrus, grapefruit and sweet tropical limes.
It tastes like
Pure fruit, sliced ripe pear, almond brioche, lovely minerally tastes. Long fizz and zing at the end.
Alida Ryder’s Greek Feta Phyllo pies with Honey & Oregano
It’s good with
Lovely mid morning glass by the pool. Perfect with fresh salty oysters, smoke salmon, smoked trout and crisp cheesy biscuits. Will also be happy with a cream cheesy type dessert with strawberries. A fun snack is Alida Ryder’s Greek Feta Phyllo Pies with Honey & Oregano. Click here for her recipe.
Perdeberg Wines, the only South African winery to produce such a wide variety of award-winning Chenin Blanc styles – says that this cultivar is so diverse it can be enjoyed on its own or paired with almost anything. So whether you prefer a crisp MCC or to indulge in a barrel-fermented and award-winning wine, you have the choice of utter enjoyment when you opt for Chenin Blanc.
The popular Perdeberg Chenin Blanc 2016 is an easy drinking wine with hints of guava, green apple and kiwi. This wine pairs well with cheeses, seafood, chicken and gammon.
The Perdeberg Vineyard Collection Chenin Blanc 2016 is slightly more serious with notes of white peach, pear and grapefruit. Pair with roast duck with honey spice glaze and leg of lamb.
The Perdeberg Dry Land Unwooded Chenin Blanc 2016 is one of Perdeberg’s ultra-premium Chenins. Hints of fig, grapefruit, white pear and fynbos make this wine very complex on the nose and palate.
The Perdeberg Dry Land Barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc is the crème da la crème of Perdeberg’s Chenin Blancs. Elegant aromas of the wood combine well with the stone fruit notes in this wine.
One of my favourites is the Natural Sweet Chenin Blanc. Apricots, marmalade and orange peel are found on the nose with hints of spun sugar on the palate. Perfect counterpoint is the soft acidity. Brilliant with a smooth paté at the beginning of the meal and just perfect with Christmas Puds and mince pies.
