Oldenburg Vineyards Chardonnay 2015
Chardonnay is a loved wine and Sauvignon Blanc aside, probably the most drunk varietal white wine in the country.
Adrian Vanderspuy Owner & Philip Costandius
Philip Costandius, GM & Winemaker at Oldenburg Chardonnay, Oldenburg Vineyards is such a practiced and award winning craftsman, that one would expect him to produce a belter of a wine. Oldenburg is situated at the top of the Banghoek Valley with a spectacular view down the valley to Groot Drakenstein. Mountains tower over the estate and in the middle is a little hillock named Rondekop with its ferrous soils creates its own little microclimate.
The Oldenburg Vineyards Chardonnay 2015 is grown on alluvial soils and has drip irrigation for when required.
Hand harvesting on Oldenburg
Picked by hand, and after destemming and crushing, 28% of the grapes are fermented in 3oo litre French oak barrels. The balance was fermented in stainless steel tanks and blended into the barrel fermented component to bring the lovely freshness the wine has.
It looks like
Bottled under screw cap in a Burgundy shaped bottle. In the glass a gem bright pale straw in colour.
It smells like
Sweet tropical limes and windfall citrus. Brush of fine oak.
It tastes like
Full palate of generous citrus fruits. Gentle flavours of marzipan from the oak. Minerality comes through like wet river stones. Lovely ending with long lasting aftertastes.
Alida Ryder’s Greek Orzo Salad with Grilled Chicken
It’s good with
This is essentially a food wine and will go well with a richly flavoured chicken dish or a lusty vegetarian bowl. Alida Ryder’s Greek Orzo Salad with Grilled Chicken is an excellent match to this wine. Lovely summery dish. Click here for her recipe.
