Marvelous Blue 2015

There are some really exciting wines coming from Stellenbosch, few as exciting as those produced by Adam Mason on Mulderbosch Estate in the Polkadraai hills in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation.

Mulderbosch Wine Estate produces Yardstick Wines and Marvelous Wines. And the Marvelous Blue 2015 is a classical red blend in the Bordeaux right bank tradition. Cabernet Franc [33%], Merlot [23%], Cabernet Sauvignon [20%], Malbec [16%] and Petit Verdot [8%].

The two lead varieties Cabernet Franc, which comes from Elgin and Stellenbosch, while the Merlot comes from Elgin.

Oak maturation adds its wondrous flavours to those the grapes offer. Cabernet Sauvignon offers Blackcurrant, Ribena and soft pipe tobacco.  The wine has a great acidity from nose to tail. The Petit Verdot brings on the depth of violet flower colour and inky colour. Cabernet Franc, a blueberry fynbos herbaceousness. The plummy red berry of the Merlot, and the Argentinian classic Malbec adds its bright fruit.

It looks like
Startling exciting Blue label on a Bordeaux shaped bottle under screw cap.  In the glass, gem bright, deeply coloured at the core which pales out to the meniscus.

It smells like
Black berry and other fruits, blueberries, bloodplums. Undertow of oak.

It tastes like
Rich round bright fruit, undertow of fynbos herbs, fabulous acidity running through a broad mid palate and a long ending aftertaste This is what red blends are about.

It’s good with
This is an excellent food wine and if chilled for about 30 minutes before serving will add hugely to the pleasure of drinking it.  I like quirky combinations and while this will go really well with your Traditional Sunday Roast Lunch or anything meaty and juicy from the braai it counterpoints vegetarian dishes too.  Hein van Tonder’s Cider Cooked Apple, Onion & Cheddar Galette, is a great match.
