One of the most exciting Distilling companies in the country at the moment is Silver Creek Craft Distillery. Founded some 12 years ago by Mark Taverner and it leapt into the market place and last year its Southern Moonshines scored a massive five-medal victory at the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards. The Moonshine Range consists of Clear Shine, smooth grain spirit, Charred Shine, which is similar in flavour to a good bourbon; and, Flavoured ‘Shines with essence made exclusively for the distillery, in the American state of Kentucky. The latter include Apple Pie Moonshine; Bon Fire Moonshine, with a zip of hot cinnamon; Salted Caramel Moonshine and Chocolate Moonshine. Followed by the fabulous Prohibition Gins, in the same clever bottle with a glass ring at the neck for ease of transport and pouring. And now, the brand new Margarita Moonshine which has already claimed its first prize, a Gold Award at the 2018 SA Women’s Wine & Spirits Awards (SAWWA)!
“In making the Margarita Moonshine, we wanted to create something laid-back and fun-loving. The classic Margarita, said to have first originated in a 1930s bar in Tijuana, was the inspiration,” says Silver Creek Craft Distillery founder and chief distiller Mark Taverner. “When you’re drinking our Margarita Moonshine, you’ll feel right there on an endless beach in Cancún or partying in one of the city’s most vibey nightclubs.”
A tempting lime green in colour, keep it in your fridge. You can already taste this stunning cocktail before you have opened the bottle. Serve it in a salt rimmed cocktail glass, or in a tumbler with ice and a shot of soda, garnish with lime slices. It will take you to a sun bathed beach, into the bush at your favourite bushcamp, of floating lazily in a boat on some sunset water.
The Margarita Moonshine has arrived at the right time as we sashay into Spring, barbecue fires burning and lots of happy people having a good time.
Located in Gauteng’s Randfontein, the state-of-the-art Silver Creek Craft Distillery does everything by hand – from mashing and fermentation to distillation and bottling. This process allows for extra special care, which is why every bottle is signed by the distiller, Mark Taverner.
The new Margarita Moonshine retails at around R260 a bottle and is available along with the full Silver Creek range, online at www.takealot.com, and selected bars, restaurants and liquor outlets around the country.
