Mark Lindhorst and I go way back when he was a student at Stellenbosch during my time at Lanzerac. After years as a successful accountant he brings his business acumen and passion for wine to the farm and wine marketing business. His accountant’s attention to detail in the production of his quality wines is bearing fruit. Belinda, his wife and a former teacher, helps with their owners’ hand-on approach.
Lindhorst Wines, is a winery with a focus on a unique Shiraz dominated blend, appropriately named “Statement” and also produces limited quantities of single varietals – vide Lindhorst Pinotage and Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The produce a delicious Rosé and a Sauvignon Blanc from quality Durbanville fruit.
The Decanter World International Wine Awards 2004, structured to highlight the importance of country of origin and terroir, turned up a gold medal for their maiden Shiraz even before the wine’s release, a sure sign that Mark and Belinda are doing things right, from the start. The Lindhorst Wines are big gentle giants, packed with colour, aroma and soft, warm, spicy fruit flavours. The wines are sold by mailing list to collectors, connoisseurs, specialist cellars, restaurants and by their website, with production kept low to focus on superior quality.
The annual activities in the vineyard and cellar, including pruning, harvesting, foot stomping, blending and bottling are all available to visitors to get a true Paarl winelands experience. Barrel tastings are arranged in order to give visitors the opportunity to taste wines in the making and to experience the effects of oak from different forests in France on the final blends. The out-sourced restaurant on the Estate, Harry’s, offers comfort food and offers the Estate as an ideal destination for a day visit.
Mark and Belinda also offer 100 loyal customers the opportunity to become “Wine Partners” – a concept that, for an upfront investment, gives 3 years of best Lindhorst Wines and the use of a magnificent cottage in the vineyards.
