Landskroon Sauvignon Blanc 2016 & Nina Timm’s Summer Capsicum Pasta Salad – 28.10.2016

As a child on my parents farm in Durbanville we were on a hill and looking west, the mountains from False Bay through to Riebeek Kasteel and further north were clearly visible.  I love mountains and love being in or on them.

Paarl Mountain is a great example of an unusual mountain as it has three large granite rocks on top which shine like pearls in the rain, hence the name given to the town by the early Dutch settlers.  The rocks are named Paarl Rock, Bretagne Rock and Gordons Rock and have been equated to Uluru in the Australian hinterland.

On the south western slopes of this fabulous mountain lies Landskroon Estate, a family owned and run wine estate, renowned for its red and port style wines.  Current Cellarmaster Paul de Villiers V won The Diners Club Wine Maker of the Year for his Port-style wines some years back.

However Paul and his winemaker Michiel du Toit produce some cracking good white wines and use grapes bought in from other growers.  The Landskroon Sauvignon Blanc 2016 is one of these.  Hand harvested, then cooled in the cellar after destemming and crushing.  Free run juice was taken off and some lightly pressed juice is added.  The juice is clear cold settled overnight and then fermented in the absence of oxygen in stainless steel tanks.  No oak is used.  The wine is then prepared for bottling.

It looks like
As all good Sauvignons should be, packed in a Bordeaux shape bottle.  Under screw cap.  In the glass a delicate pale straw with lime green flashes.

It smells like
Due to harvesting at different stages in the ‘ideal ripeness’ window the aromas are both green with green figs and scrunched fynbos herbs and tropical fruits.

It tastes like
Lovely mouth filling generous fruit. Perfect balance from entry right through to the zippy aftertastes.

It’s good with
A perfect refreshed on a Sunday morning.  Also good as a pre-prandial aperitif. It is just lovely with summery foods. Nina Timm’s Summer Capsicum Pasta Salad is a lovely cold dish, a lovely partner. Click here for her recipe.
