Landskroon Wine Estate is situated on the south-western slopes of the iconic Paarl Mountain looking south towards Table Mountain. For five generations it has been owned and managed by the de Villiers family, the head of which has always been named Paul. The flagship wines of the Estate are named after these Pauls. The Landskroon Paul de Villiers Shiraz 2015 is one of these.
The grapes for the Landskroon Paul de Villiers Shiraz 2015 are 100% Shiraz which come from specially selected vineyard blocks from which they are hand harvested. Once in the cellar the bunches are destemmed and crushed and are taken to open fermentation tanks. Here fermentation takes place under controlled temperatures with regular punch downs taking place during the first half of fermentation. This is followed by a maturation period of 18 months in 87% new American oak and 13% 2nd fill French oak barrels. The wine is then prepared for bottling and will age well for at least 8 years.
It looks like
Bottled in a Bordeaux shaped bottle under natural cork with the elegant black livery which is used for this range. In the glass, it is a rich ruby red at the core which pales out to garnet at the edges.
It smells like
Classical Shiraz whiffs of red and black berries and ripe blood plums. A grind of pepper and oak and its concomitant spices.
It tastes like
Deliciously full bodied. Fabulous fruit. The ‘sweet’ American oak adding its vanillins and the French oak adding its gravitas. The wine has a full mid palate and a long and gently waning ending.
It’s good with
Ideal as a glass for post prandial philosophical conversation with a bar of snappy Belgian dark chocolate. That said, it is perfect with any meat dish, whether it is a cold beef salad, something out of a casserole or off the braai.
