La Bri Syrah 2013
La Bri has the most beautiful situation in the south-eastern corner of the Franschhoek with the benign Alpine Franschhoek Mountains looming over the property. The charming Manor House is surrounded by oaks and set in a lovely grass park. The La Bri Winery is managed by GM and Winemaker Irene Waller, a multi award winning star.

The La Bri Syrah 2013 is made up of 98% of the estate’s Shiraz grapes and 2% Viognier. These two southern French grapes are co-fermented with both the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation taking place in the barrel. The wine was matured for 24 months in 225 litre oak barrels. 12% of the barrels were new and the rest previous fill. Irene used 2% American oak barrels, the remainder being French.
The wine was then prepared for bottling and rest before going out into the market place.
Syrah grapes ripening on the vine at La Bri
It looks like
Bottled under cork in a Burgundy Shaped bottle. The La Bri wine labels are always interesting, each different wine using a different flower or plant. This wine uses a selection of herbs. In the glass, a regal purple Satsuma plum in colour which pales out to garnet at the rim.
It smells like
Irene’s notes on the wine say “Our Syrah has powerful perfumed aromas of fennel, thyme, rosemary, violet and oregano, much like one would experience whilst strolling through a herb garden.”
It tastes like
Lovely sappy bright fruited entry. Full palate with rustic red berries like roadside brambles and mulberries. There are also flavours of Lindt Mint Intense dark chocolate. The fruit, oak, acidity and well interwoven tannins are in perfect harmony in the long aftertaste.
Nina Timm’s Roast Pork Chops
It’s good with
Most meat dishes and full flavoured vegetarian food. It works wonderfully with the lamb from the Karoo which is pre-spiced by the aromatic Karoo bossies. Nina Timm of My Easy Cooking offers her utterly delicious roasted pork chops as the perfect match. Click here for her recipe.
