La Bri Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

La Bri is a wine estate tucked under the Alpine mountains in the south eastern end of the Franschhoek Valley and Wine Appellation. A Manor House of architectural heritage and beauty sits square on the Estate next to the Winery. Here Irene de Fleuriot, GM and Winemaker, works her magic and makes a truly sublime range of wines. One of these, which is made only in exceptional years, is the La Bri Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2015.

La Bri Cellar

The grapes for the La Bri Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 come from Cabernet Block No 1 on the Estate, which was planted in 1999. A mature vineyard producing excellent quality grapes. The grapes are hand harvested and then brought to the cellar where they are destalked and allowed to macerate in stainless steel tanks in their own juice for a week.  Once dry fermented, the wine is taken to 100% new French oak barrels. Here the malolactic fermentation takes place and the wine is matured for 2 years before being prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Bottled under natural cork in a Bordeaux shaped bottle. The label in printed ‘in reverse’ as this is a limited-edition wine. Watsonia alba is the flower associated with this wine, it has large white cup shaped flowers. In the glass, it is a deep bloodplum, almost black red, at the core which pales out to ruby at the edges.

It smells like
All the wonderful classical Cab aromas. Black berries, roadside brambles and blueberries. The excellent oak supporting the fruit.

It tastes like
Dark berry fruits follow on the nose, with Morello cherries. An excellent mouth filling wine with a golden thread of acidity running through it from entry and well into the long aftertaste where it is perfectly interwoven with the tannins and the generosity of dark fruits. This wine is so accessible now, yet will reward you doubly is properly cellared for a couple of years.

This is the bottle you drink after dinner in front of the fire with serious philosophical conversation like the make-up of the rugby team at school, provincial or national level. It is of course built for meat. It rather needs meat which has the lovely caramelly edges given it by the braai, the grill or the pan.
