Klein Constantia KC Sauvignon Blanc 2016 & Ina Paarman’s Cauliflower Steaks with Red Pepper Sauce – 24.03.2017

Klein Constantia KC Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Constantia is the cradle of the South African Wine Industry. It was here that in the late 1600s, that Simon van der Stel set up a commercial winery.  It was from here that the early Constantia wines were exported to, and became the rage of Europe. Drunk by Kings, Princes and written about by the likes of Baudelaire, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. Bottles were sent to Napoleon when he was in exile on St Helena.

Klein Constantia Winemaker, Matthew Day

Klein Constantia is a fine producer of wines, and Matthew Day, the winemaker has a soft spot for Sauvignon Blanc.

The Estate produces a range of modern, fruit led, easy drinking wines under the KC label. Grapes from outside the estate, from excellent quality vineyards in the Coastal Wine Appellation, preferably close to the sea or at altitude, are also used in this sparky blend, the Klein Constantia KC Sauvignon Blanc 2016.

Sauvignon Blanc Grapes ripening on the vine

Grapes coming in were chilled overnight and were then carefully processed in the cellar in the best Klein Constantia white wine tradition.  Cool long fermentations of up to 4 weeks and lying on the gross lees for at least 5 months, retained the fruity aromas and flavours and built up great mid-palate weight. The wine was then prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Bottled in a Bordeaux bottle under screw cap with a label which proudly announces the name of the Estate.  In the glass, a gem bright pale straw with green tinges.

It smells like
Sweet tropical limes and piel de sapo melon.

Piel de Sapo Melon

It tastes like
Melon and figs with a touch of fynbos herbaceousness. Zippy acidity in the long and gently waning aftertaste.

Ina Paarman’s Cauliflower Steaks with Red Pepper Sauce

It’s good with
This is a great refreshing glass on its own. Excellent as an appetite awakener before and leading into a meal.  Loves crisp green summery saladings with seafood like prawns, crayfish, marron or mussels.  I recently saw a recipe on Ina Paarman’s website which she kindly gave me permission to use. Ina Paarman’s Cauliflower Steaks with Red Pepper Sauce. Perfect vegetarian lunch dish. Click here for her recipe.
