Groote Post’s Kapokberg Vineyard Selection range, the historic estate’s flagship range, is named after the Kapokberg, the highest of the Darling Hills at 459m above sea level, where some of the estate’s best grapes are grown. Overlooking the icy Atlantic Ocean with its Benguela Current running up the west coast from the deep south, the prevailing summer south-easterly winds ameliorate summer heat in the vineyards.
The grapes for the Groote Post Kapokberg Chardonnay 2017 had light bunches and small berries, usually the product of a dry land vineyard – and this in the midst of the worst drought experienced in the Cape in living memory. Picked from a 23 year old vineyard at the end of the ideal ripeness window the grapes were taken to Lukas Wentzel and his team in the cellar where they were destalked and crushed. Once the juice had settled clear it was rack to, and fermented in 300-litre French oak barrels and aged on the lees for 10 months. 25% of the barrels were new French oak, while the remainder were previous fill barrels. The wine was then prepared for bottling
From a Burgundy shaped bottled closed with natural cork. Simple elegant labelling as one knows from Groote Post. IN the glass, it is a gem bright straw colour. The aromas are of sweet tropical limes, almond butter and the full flavour of ripe white fleshed peaches. From entry the palate is filled with creamy citrus, beautifully applied oak and almond brioche toast, hot and buttered. The aftertaste is refreshing and beguiling, just wanting you to taste more.
The Groote Post Kapokberg Chardonnay 2017 is a food wine. Excellent with a buttery slow roasted organic chicken or a tranche of SASSI friendly fish like Hake. My brick chicken is a great partner. Click here for my recipe.
The wine sells for an even handed R160.00 a bottle.
