Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve Red 2013

Groot Constantia, looking particularly lovely now with its majestic oaks covered in the greenest of leaves, the view down over the vineyards to False Bay, the historic white painted buildings, is essentially the cradle of the South African Wine Industry.  A showpiece which is amongst the top tourist destinations in the Cape alongside Table Mountain and Cape Point and others.

A premium wine estate producing premium wines. With Floricius Beukes as Vineyardist, Boela Gerber the Winemaker, tells me that since his arrival and understanding of the vineyards the grape quality has improved markedly. The result, many awards for the Groot Constantia Wines.

The Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve 2013, perfect for your Christmas lunch, is a blend of 31% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Petit Verdot –a classical blend of Bordeaux origin grapes.  The south to south east facing vineyards are planted on a mix of Glenrosa

[good water retention], Cartref and Hutton soils. The blocks are planted between 70 and 120 meters above sea level and are affected by cooling breezes coming down the Constantia Mountain from the Atlantic and up from False Bay.

Vineyards chosen for the grapes for this flagship wine are treated with special care during elevation in the Cellar. During the first half of the fermentation, the wine is pumped over the cap every four hours.  Post fermentation, there is an extended maceration process of about 4 weeks.

Maturation takes place in 225 litre French oak barrels.  80% of the barrels were new, 11% second fill and 9% third fill barrels. Blending and preparation for bottling then took place.

It looks like
Dignified Bordeaux shaped bottle with the Constantia logo embossed in glass just below the neck.  The label, Groot Constantia, like a Chateau etched on the ecru label. In the glass a dark deep plum at the core which pales out to delicate ruby at the rim.

It smells like
Black berry fruits, blackcurrants, Morello Cherries. Oak and its concomitant spices in undertow.

It tastes like
Plush, sappy, ripe, intense, fruit billowing out into the centre palate. All the things you want in a fine wine like this, a little tannin grip, the supportive oak all well integrated in a long aftertaste displaying the elegance of Constantia red wines.

It’s good with
This is a good bottle perhaps for after dinner which a snappy shard of dark chocolate for some gentle discussion. It is a food wine par excellence.
