The blending of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the two white grapes of Bordeaux make, for me, some truly great wines. The gravitas which the Semillon adds to the sprightly Sauvignon Blanc, makes for perfect food wines. The Glen Carlou The Collection Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is such a wine. Johnnie Calitz has hit the nail on the head in my opinion with this 50/50 blend.
The grapes for the Glen Carlou The Collection Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2018 come from the Groenkloof Wine Appellation up on the West Coast, where the life of the vines is determined by the cooling breezes off the Benguela Current which sweeps up the West Coast from the cold south Atlantic Ocean. The two varieties are harvested from two adjacent dryland bush vineyards. Once destalked, crushed and fermented, the wine was aged for 4 months in a combination of new and second fill French oak barrels. It was then prepared for bottling.
From a Bordeaux bottle closed with natural cork which is covered with wax. The label on handmade paper is elegant and tells the story of the wine. In the glass, it is a pale butter gold with youthful lime green flashes. The aromas tend to the green, fig, fynbos herbaceousness and fresh mowed lawn. There are some notes of white flowers. From entry, a thread of acidity runs through the mid palate into a long and refreshing aftertaste. The flavours are piquant grapefruit, ripe white fleshed peaches and an undertow of oak and its concomitant spice and vanilla. Complex layers with a cashmere softness. Ready for drinking now, but with cool cellaring, will reward anything up to five years.
The wine is not a quaffer, but an elegant sipper. It is just perfect with food. My friend Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen, the only South African with a Michelin Star for his restaurant in Nice called Jan, kindly allowed me to use this recipe for his Pickled Baby Hake with Peaches. Peaches are still in season and of course this is a traditional Easter dish in the Cape usually eaten on Good Friday. This is a truly deeply delicious version and perfect with the Glen Carlou The Collection Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2018. Click HERE for Jan’s recipe.
