The Glen Carlou Collection Red Blend 2017

One of the exciting things on Glen Carlou is the way winemaker Johnnie Calitz has embraced the Glen Carlou Collection Wines. He is producing some sublime wines in this range. Glen Carlou is on the slopes of the iconic Simonsberg, in the Simonsberg Paarl Appellation. Glen Carlou sees the first rays of dawn and the lovely Restaurant sees full summer sunshine when it opens at 12h00, Monday to Sunday. Here Johan Stander, the Executive Chef provides much commented upon dishes.

The harvest is upon us

The grapes for the The Glen Carlou Collection Red Blend 2017 are harvested on the estate and the blend is made up of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% each Cabernet Franc and Merlot, a classic Bordeaux blend. The wines were separately vinified for later blending and matured for 16 months in French oak barrels of which 70% were new, this is serious oaking.

Glen Carlou Winemaker Johnnie Calitz

Glen Carlou Collection Red Blend 2017 from a Bordeaux shaped bottle under natural cork. The label is classic Glen Carlou Collection, printed on artisanal paper with the font looking like an old typewriter was used. In the glass, a vibrant blood plum at the heart which pales out to purple ruby at the edges.

As the to the aromas and flavours, Johnnie Calitz says of this wine, “Cabernet Sauvignon’s vibrant red fruit and cassis combine with Merlot’s plum and vanilla undertones. Hints of tobacco leaf and green bell pepper from the Cabernet Franc round out a complex nose. The full-bodied palate is abundant with blackberry fruit, mint and dark chocolate. Finely grained wood tannins frame a textured extended finish. I am so pleased that this new wine was awarded a Double Gold at Michelangelo International Wine Award and 4.5 Platter stars 2019”. Couldn’t have put it better myself. Like all the Glen Carlou Collection this is an eminently drinkable wine which, with cool cellaring, will reward you in the future.
