One of Lustau’s Sherry Bodegas

Bodegas Lustau was acknowledged as the Best Sherry Producer 2016 at the 47th edition of the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition in London.

With this new award the Lustau closes a golden year which includes over 100 medals in international competitions and the Len Evans Trophy from the International Wine Challenge, awarded for quality and consistency.

Bodegas Lustau offers a wide range of sherry wines and is considered one of the top names for wines in the region. It was the most decorated Spanish bodega in 2015.

The good news is that when Douglas Green went searching for fine sherries to bottle under the iconic Douglas Green Label, Lustau was the choice.

Three Douglas Green Spanish Sherries

Three Douglas Green Sherries, bottled in Jerez and imported to South Africa, give us the opportunity to drink superb Spanish Sherry on home turf.

All three are bottled in a classical Sherry bottle under screw cap.  The label clearly indicates what the wine is and from whence it comes.  The back label has the necessary Sherry geographic indicator seals.

Do serve these fine Sherries chilled, and in wine glasses or schooners, rather than the tiny conventional Sherry glasses.

Douglas Green Pale Cream No 1
made from the Palomino Grape

In the glass – and please use a decent sized glass – it is a pale gold straw colour.
Gentle whiffs of yeasty nuttiness and kelp.
The sherry has a wonderfully refreshing palate enlivening entry.  There is a saltiness to it and then the fruit, baked quince and Piel de Sapo melon.  Really fills the palate and takes its time disappearing slowly.

Douglas Green Medium Dry No 2
made from the Palomino Grape

In the glass a golden amber with green flashes.
Wonderful nutty aromas and notes of windfall citrus and raisins.
Dry, yet with a gentle sweetness which is very appealing.  Wonderful mouth filling wine with great balance, raisin fruit, nuts, spices, oak, acidity and length of aftertaste.  Do serve it chilled in a generous size glass.

Douglas Green Cream No 3
made from Palomino & Pedro Ximenes Grapes

In the glass, it is a golden amber mahogany.
Rich with nuts and spices and the heady aromas of fynbos honey.
Nuts and spice from the nose continue through to the palate.  Unctuous and mouth filling. Layers revealing themselves as you proceed down the glass. Flavours lasting in the long aftertaste.
