DeWaal vineyards are all in their maturity and producing some excellent wines. Their Top of the Hill Vineyard is now 66 years old, the oldest Pinotage Vineyard in the world. The Merlot Vineyards, which are under 15 years old, are planted on low north facing slopes on gravel and loam soils. The vines are trellised and deliver in the region of an even handed 11 tons per hectare.
DeWaal Young Vines Merlot 2014 underwent fermentation and maceration periods of 14 days. This was followed by 6 months in French oak barrels before being prepared for bottling.
This fruit driven wine will be served during the 2016 Golf Open Championship at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland. It has been listed, together with its fellow Young Vines Wine, the Sauvignon Blanc, for some 5 years at the Royal Troon where it is very popular.
It looks like
Packed in a Bordeaux shape bottle under screw cap, elegant livery. In the glass, a rich plum red that pales to crimson at the edge.
It smells like
Classical Merlot aromas, roadside brambles and ripe Satsuma plums.
It tastes like
Reflected in the mouth are the berries, plums, oak and its concomitant spices. It is a gentle wine, creamy, with tannins beautifully interwoven with the clean crisp fruit. Good length of flavour. Chill for about 30 minutes before service for maximum enjoyment.
It’s good with
Merlot is a good wine by the glass and very popular. It is made for food and Justine Wall’s Pork & Prunes is a great match. The prunes are echoed in the wine, and the creaminess of the wine is echoed in the sauce. Click here for Justine’s recipe.
