With summer almost here, it’s time to look for easy drinking wines for warmer weather and not to look for an ‘occasion’ at which to drink them.  Sunday morning under the pergola reading the Sunday papers which might get you a little hot under the collar! Or perhaps just a really good book.

DeWaal Young Vines Chenin Blanc 2016 come from vines which are 10 to 15 years old, a time when they are producing truly fine grapes.

I think it is fair to say that Chenin Blanc is making a resurgence, though it has been around for a long time.  There are more – by six times – Chenin Blanc grapes planted in the Cape than in its home the Loire Valley in France.  Some truly old vineyards are being nurtured in the Cape by Rosa Kruger, well known vineyard expert.

The trellised vineyards on the estate are planted on lower north facing slopes in a mix of sand and gravel.  There is drip irrigation which is used when required.  The crop is an even handed 9 tons per hectare. Maceration and fermentation time is between 10 and 14 days.  No oak barrels are used.

It looks like
Bottled under screwcap is a Bordeaux shaped bottle with an elegant DeWaal label. In the glass it is a pale golden straw in colour.

It smells like
Aromas of tropical fruits, guava, white flowers and fynbos honey

It tastes like
A generosity of fruit, particularly guava. Desiccated pineapple, ripe clingstone peaches, slow poached quince.

It’s good with

Top of the Hill Vineyard Walk
The next fun walk to the top of the Hill Vineyard takes place on 12 November. Helga Truter tells me “The last one was hosted on Pinotage Day 8 Oct, it was a cooler day with a couple of rain drops, but we were prepared with raincoats and umbrellas, while walking through the vineyards but this all added to the adventure!  The guests had a wonderful time – they were from UK, Brazil, Cape Town, Stellenbosch –  and the Top of the Hill Pinotage 2014 tasted like heaven in that chilly weather in the vineyards!  Janine’s cheese luncheon afterwards really impressed our guests.”

Meet at 09h45 at the Tasting Venue. The Walk commence at 10h00, through the farm and the many rows of vineyards to the shade of the magnificent old Wild Fig Tree.

Included with the Top of the Hill Walk is a tasting of the DeWaal range, a lovely selection of local cheeses and delights on the outside Terrace and a glass of DeWaal wine. Cost: R195.00 per person.
