DeWaal Pinotage 2015
When I think of DeWaal Wines, situated on the Uiterwyk Estate just south of the town of Stellenbosch, I usually think Pinotage. DeWaal Pinotages are amongst Pinotages from only 8 producers who have been awarded in the ABSA Pinotage Top 10 award 6 times or more in the years the competition has been running.
DeWaal Wines owns the oldest Pinotage Vineyard in South Africa called Top of the Hill, planted in 1950. Charl Theron de Waal, who was born on the Estate made the first barrel of Pinotage in 1941. This year the Top of the Hill was awarded 4 and a half stars in the informative Platter’s Guide to South African Wine Guide in which only 2 Pinotages received a 5-star rating.
The DeWaal Barrel Cellar
The DeWaal Pinotage 2015 has just been released. The grapes are sourced from 25 – 30-year-old vineyards planted on gravel and loan on the warmer north facing slopes. The vineyards yield an even handed 9 tons per hectare.
Fermentation and maturation takes place over a period of 14 days. Maturation takes place in for 6 months in French oak barrels before the wine is prepared for bottling.
It looks like
Bottled with a screw cap, the bottle is a Bordeaux shape and the livery really elegant. In the glass a deep Satsuma plum at the core which pales to a purple garnet at the rim.
It smells like
Classical Pinotage whiffs of plums and sweet cherries. Oak in undertow.
It tastes like
A medium bodied wine, richly flavoured with lovely red and black fruits. Mouth filling with well interwoven tannins in the lovely youthful aftertaste. This wine is a laster and will go for at least 6 or more years from harvest if well cellared.
My Bobotie, my grandmother’s spoons
It’s good with
This is a lovely glass of red wine while waiting for the braai flames to subside. It is a great food wine, perfect with spicy especially meats off the braai and some of our traditional dishes like Boerewors, Bobotie and Tomato Bredie. If you would like my Bobotie Recipe – CLICK HERE
