While DeWaal wines is a winery with a serious Pinotage history.  The oldest Pinotage vineyard in the world, the first Pinotage made in 1941 by CT de Waal who was born in the beautiful old Uiterwyk Manor House on the Estate. The modern DeWaal winery produces a range of wines – all of which are well awarded.

Uiterwyk Wine Estate, now known as DeWaal Wines, was one of the first producers of Merlot in South Africa.  The 1984 was the maiden vintage and was chosen to be served to First class passengers of South African Airways in 1986. The 2014 vintage was selected as one of the top 14 wines in the Merlot category at the recent Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2016.

The Merlot vineyard on DeWaal is planted on gravel and loam soils, low down on the north facing slopes on the estate. The vineyard is over 25 years old and yields an even handed 7 tons a hectare.

The fermentation and maceration for the DeWaal Merlot 2014 took place over 14 days and was followed by a maturation period of 14 months in 225 litre second fill French oak barrels. The wine was then prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Bottled under a cork closure in a Bordeaux shaped bottled.  The label is classical DeWaal, elegant and simple.  In the glass a deep plum at the core which pale out to garnet at the rim.

It smells like
All the Merlot whiffs you are looking for – dark berries, plums and chocolate.

It tastes like
Fruit driven with the fabulous fruit of black berries, mulberries and roadside brambles and dark Satsuma plums.  The oak and oak spice is supportive of the fruit. Undertow of dark chocolate.  Perfect harmony in the long lingering ending.

It’s good with
Merlot is very popular as a glass wine in many restaurants, particularly in the USA as it is known to be soft and easy to drink.

It is a great food wine, which is happy with lighter meats like duck and chicken and certainly the inevitable Christmas Turkey. Alida Ryder’s Caramel Pork Belly is a perfect partner, and would make a lovely alternative Christmas lunch.  Click here for her recipe.
