DeWaal Wine Estate in Stellenbosch is one of those ‘steeped in history’ estates. Situated in the Stellenbosch Kloof surrounded by premium producers, it boasts the oldest Pinotage Vineyard in the world, planted 66 years ago. CT de Waal who was born in Uiterwyk, the estate’s lovely old Cape Dutch house, made South Africa’s first barrel of Pinotage for his friend and creator of the grape, Abraham Perold. Another milestone along the time line was that the estate produced the first bottled Merlot under the Estate’s Uiterwyk label in 1984.
The estate produces some fine reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage and blended reds. The Young Vines Series offers both red and white fruit driven wines for easy drinking and which are great value in return for your Rand.
The vines which provide the grapes for the DeWaal Merlot 2014 are planted in 3 wire hedge trellising on the lower south facing slopes on the farm. They produced an evenhanded 7 tons per hectare of grapes.
After careful elevation in the cellar by winemaker Daniel de Waal, the wine spent 12 months in 225 litre French oak barrels. It was then prepared for bottling.
It looks like
Bottle under cork in a Bordeaux shaped bottled with the classic DeWaal livery. In the glass it is an opaque dark Satsuma plum skin, which pales out at the rim to a rich garnet.
It smells like
A generosity of dark berries and plums. Oak and its concomitant spices.
It tastes like
Classical Merlot. Rich, round, plummy, soft with gentle tannins and well integrated wood. Nice full mouthfeel, broad mid-palate and a pleasing long ending brushed with berries, plums and oak spice.
It’s good with
Merlot is a popular ‘wine by the glass’ as a result of its easy drinking properties. It loves meat, from the oven, the braai, the potjie and, as a snack biltong and dried boerewors. Justine Wall’s Shredded Pork with herbs is a great match. Click here for her recipe.
