Up towards the top of the Hemel en Aarde Ridge in a tiny ward which is part of the Walker Bay Wine Appellation you will find Creation Wines. Planted on mountain foothills and much affected by the nearby Atlantic Ocean to the South, the Estate is known not only for its sublime wines, but for the warmth of its hospitality and the excellence of its food. The Creation Chardonnay 2018 underwent maturation in French oak barrels for 10 months with fortnightly bâtonnage taking place. The make-up of the barrel mix was 30% new barrels and the balance was made up of 2nd and 3rd fill barrels. The wine was then prepared for bottling and bottled in November 2018.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is simple and elegant. In the glass the wine is a pale golden straw, brightshining. The aromas are all about fruit. You will find, pink poached quince, sliced fresh pear and ripe white fleshed peaches. These are repeated on the rich and generous palate which has a touch of lime and an undertow of oak spice and vanilla. All the components in the most perfect harmony, the fruit, the oak, the acidity, the touch of minerals. This is a very impressive glass. The wine, if cool cellared for another two to three years will reward handsomely.
The Creation Chardonnay 2018 is a serious wine, not one for quaffing, but one for serious sipping and of course perfect at the lunch or dinner table. The wine has enough oomph to complement a roast pork belly with crunchy crackling or veal scallops in a sauce flavoured with Orange or Marsala. I always think that its perfect partner is a lovely buttery roast organic chicken. Dianne Bibby’s Roasted Buttered Chicken is the perfect partner.
