Carrol Boyes, doyenne of South African Design, now produces premium wines…

Carrol Boyes, doyenne of South African Design

Carrol Boyes, the well-known South African designer, has partnered with her brother, farmer and financier John Boyes, to create a unique range of limited edition premium wine.

I recently had to opportunity to taste two of them, and while the bottles have amusing and typical Carrol Boyes labels, the wine is serious stuff.

Carrol Boyes Sketchbook Chenin Blanc 2016

Carrol Boyes Sketchbook Chenin Blanc 2016

It looks like
Bottled in a Burgundy shaped bottle under natural cork. The label is a sketch by Carrol Boyes, an amusing blue-gloved lady. In the glass, a gem bright golden straw with amber green flashes.

It smells like
Classical tropical fruit aromas, guavas, white flowers and sliced Granny Smith Apples.

It tastes like
Many layers with full flavours. From entry a golden thread of crisp appley acidity accompanied by a full creamy mid-palate and a full ending, which begs for another sip.

It’s good with
For me, this is a perfect food wine, and Chenin Blanc and Chicken are the most perfect of partners. It is good with Oriental dishes, delicate Kerala Curries and Goat Cheese. Dianne Bibby’s Chakalaka Roast Chicken is a great match. Click here for her recipe.

Carrol Boyes Sketchbook Merlot 2015

Carrol Boyes Sketchbook Merlot 2015

It looks like
Bottled in a Bordeaux shaped bottle, with a painting by Carrol Boyes of a red gloved lady who is saying – “come on, taste me.“ In the glass, a rich bloodplum red at the core which pales out to ruby at the edges.

It smells like
Dark berries, berries and plums. Dark chocolate and coconut from the oak.

It tastes like
Rich and layered, round and soft. Big mid palate in which the cherry and plum shine. The oak spice, the cashmere clad tannins, the acidity, all point towards a wine which can age, though it is very accessible now. Nice long and gently waning ending.

It’s good with
Red meat is the answer here. And again, Dianne Bibby’s Smoky Joe’s Beef Fillet with Lemony Salsa Verde is an excellent partner. Click here for her recipe.
