I remember about two years ago dining at Café del Sol Botanico in Bryanston and talking to the lady who was the hostess that night and having a thoroughly happy evening. Recently an invitation to lunch at the Original Café del Sol Classico in Olivedale resulted in one of the happiest restaurant meals I have had in a long time. In a wing of an unpretentious shopping centre in Olivedale you will find the original restaurant opened by Luciana Treccani some 12 years ago.
She it was who opened the door for us and gave us the warmest of welcomes, like being embraced by a favourite Italian Aunt. Warm and fuzzy and it continued throughout the meal, being gently fussed over by this quintessential Italian Mamma.
The decor of the restaurant is simple and casual, the kitchen is open plan, so you get the buzz. It was a Wednesday lunch and the joint was jumping. The tables have good quality woven paper cloths and napkins. The walls are covered in quotes from so many famous, notorious and well-known people, you need never feel that you are left alone or waiting. There’s lots to read. Also, on the walls there is a myriad of honours and awards from Eat Out, Ospitalita Italiana, Trip Advisor and many more. Awards for their extensive and eclectic wine list amongst them.
The menu is of a kind that leaves you wanting to order everything on it and for it to come slowly to your table. A host of Italian favourites and many that you have not come across before. We were fortunate to have a lovely waiter, Joubert [said his name tag] whom we later discovered was one of the founding members of staff when the restaurant opened 12 years ago. Available, unobtrusive, and with a charming manner and captivating smile.
Our dishes were just so delicious, each dish with the Mamma’s touch. Luciana’s daughter Chiara is responsible for creating the dishes, while her son Ryan is also part of the team. I particularly enjoyed my risotto, it had the tiniest dice of fennel in it and lemon juice which lifted and brightened the flavours.
With our lunch we had a Pinot Noir from Newton Johnson Vineyards in the Hemel en Aarde Valley, Hermanus. Chilled, it was the perfect match to all our dishes.
A happy time and a place to which we will soon return.
