We recently spent a night in the utter luxury of Werf Cottage No 4, one of seven cottages just outside the long white walls of the Werf of the Boschendal Manor House, in its perfect situation in the Groot Drakenstein Valley.
These seven former farm labourer’s cottages have been designed as five-star accommodation on the Estate. There are some 40 cottages scattered over the rest of the farm which offer just lovely accommodation, so perfect for a family weekend away.
Melissa Payne who is the Accommodation Manager, experienced as a large luxury hotel manager, has her rooms spread out all over the farm.
Werf Cottage No 4, ‘our’ cottage was in fact the former residence of our domestic help when we lived on the estate, so the overnighting had a strong emotional link as our daughter spent many happy times there.
Self-contained with its own well equipped kitchen and bar, Werf No 4 has a very comfortable sitting and dining area, complete with satellite television and a view from the front verandah which would get all the stars Baedeker has to offer. The bedroom and bathroom remind of Victorian times with all the modern comforts.
The convenience of the closeness of The Werf Restaurant and the Deli and Shop in the Werf means of course that you don’t have to cook!
Christiaan Campbell and his team in The Werf Kitchen will provide you with a great dinner and the Deli and Shop, a breakfast you will remember. Do take a large basket with you as you will want to take home some of the fresh, organic, sustainably grown vegetables from The Werf Garden.
The Boschendal Estate Wines are there for the tasting and the buying. With our first courses at dinner in The Werf Restaurant we drank the Boschendal 1685 Chardonnay 2016, so special and so accessible and such a perfect food wine.
