Part of the Klein Constantia Wine Estate stable is Anwilka, a wines Estate in the southerly end of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. This small 40 hectare red wine estate is affected by cooling maritime breezes from False Bay which is clearly seen from the vineyards. Old ferricrete soils produce grapes which make lush red wines.
Under the guidance of two well-known Bordeaux wine personalities, Hubert de Boüard (co-owner of Château Angélus in Saint-Emilion) and Bruno Prats (former owner of Château Cos d’Estournel in Saint-Estèphe), Anwilka has established a worldwide reputation for this fine red blend.
After a wet cold winter during which the vines had perfect rest, and a cool summer, the grapes ripened slowly with full flavours. They were hand harvested into small crates to protect the integrity of the fruit. Careful sorting took place in the cellar before the bunches were stalked and taken to fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Pump overs took place during fermentation and then once dry the skins were macerated in the wine for an extended time. Once pressed the wine was taken for 13 months to 400 litre French oak barrels, half of which were new and the balance second fill.
The blend is made up of 87% Shiraz and the balance is Cabernet Sauvignon.
