The Vineyard Hotel – fun in May

The Vineyard Hotel, situated on the banks of the Liesbeek River in leafy Claremont, has an amazing history.  Brought to fame as the residence of Captain Andrew Barnard and his wife, Lady Anne Barnard.  They bought the farm, then known as Wingerd in the early 19th Century. Lady Anne became a well-known traveller and diarist, keeping generous notes of their live and travels in the old Cape Colony where Captain Barnard was the Colonial Secretary in the Cape Administration of the time.

The Vineyard Hotel is celebrating this year by a series of dinners and serving the wines of farms she visited or near to where she overnighted. The dinner this month is on Friday 12th May and the presenting vineyard will be the Meerlust wine Estate in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation.

Pride of the Myburgh family since before the time of the Barnards’ intrepid 1798 trip into the interior, Meerlust is recognized for producing wines of exceptional character, made only from grapes grown on the estate. It took the Barnards five hours to reach Meerlust from The Vineyard.  If you have that far to travel after dinner, consider overnighting at the Vineyard.

Winemaker Chris Williams produces a sublime range of wines from the Estate’s noble varieties, each a treat.  Meerlust is one of the Vineyard’s Wine Partners, assisting in the management, and making wines from the hotel’s vineyard, in rotation with four other partners.

The Garden Lounge

The other treats for May are the Monday evening complimentary Wine Tastings in the Garden Lounge at which a Wine Producer presents its wines from 18h00 to 19h00. Consult The Vineyard Hotel Website to see who the producer of the week will be.
