Smeul – Riana Scheepers, Marietjie Koekemoer & Leonie Scholtz

I was told recently that one of the growth areas in the publishing world is Afrikaans Cookery Books. I am not surprised given the quality and excellence of these two books received over recent days.

Marietjie Koekemoer has been a friend for a number of years. Together she and Riana Scheepers, a marketer and Leonie Scholtz, a radiologist have created a culinary gem – Smeul.  A wonderful collection of heritage food, comfort food, old food, new food.  All beautifully photographed by Leonie Scholtz. You can feel from the book that these three ladies are friends, there is a unity in the book which comes from friendship, time in the kitchen, wine in hand, lots of laughter and some great feasting.

Published by Lapa, this is a book you need in your kitchen. Over time, it will be covered in spills of sauces, crumbs and of course wine!

Toor met Hoender – Karen Hart

Just when you thought you had a good repertoire of chicken dishes and feel that no-one can come up with something new, along comes Karen Hart’s Toor met Hoender. Really a niche book, but there are many of us in that niche. Filled with excellent advice on how to deal with a chicken, how to cut it up and the various methods of cooking the bird.

She has some of the classics – always with a twist.  Some new and very innovative dishes, all beautifully photographed by Henk Hattingh.

Chicken with pastry, chicken for every day, chicken with pasta and rice, chicken from all over the world, chicken on the braai, chicken for picnics, parties and snack boxes.

With chicken so easily available and economical, ideal family food – and indeed loved family food – here are many recipes to add to your repertoire.

Published by Human & Rousseau. Karen is the Food Editor of Kuier and regularly broadcasts on Radio Kansel. This is her first book.
