The Square Restaurant at The Vineyard
The season of Tastes of 2017, the wine-paired dinners at The Vineyard Hotel will commence on 8th April. This year the theme for the Dinners which will be held in the hotel’s well known Square Restaurant is the routes Lady Anne Barnard followed on her exploration of the Western Cape. Wines from estates along the routes and the bounty of fresh ingredients available to our chefs will be celebrated. Lady Anne Barnard and her husband Captain Andrew Barnard, Colonial Secretary in the early 19th century were owners of a farm called Wingerd, now the site of The Vineyard Hotel.
Each of these highly-anticipated dinners focuses on a particular wine estate, a wine district or group of wine growers. Prior to each, the chosen wines are tasted with an array of ingredients, and the combinations that best complement each other are assessed. The Vineyard’s chefs then create a delectable menu around these ingredients. The result is always a triumph and great fun as the dinners are led by representatives of the wine estates and the Head Chef of The Vineyard, Carl van Rooyen.

28 April: Vineyard Hotel’s Wine Partners
This special dinner celebrates the wines of Meerlust, Klein Constantia, Simonsig, Warwick and Waterford. These iconic wine estates guide the making of the Vineyard’s own vintage label from grapes grown in the hotel’s vineyard on the peaceful banks of the Liesbeek.

12 May: Meerlust Wine Estate
Pride of the Myburgh family since before the time of the Barnards’ intrepid 1798 trip into the interior, Meerlust is recognized for producing wines of exceptional character, made only from grapes grown on the estate. It took the Barnards five hours to reach Meerlust – if you have that far to travel after dinner with us, consider overnighting at the Vineyard.
Michel Rolland, the world’s best known ‘flying winemaker’
26 May: Marianne Wine Estate
Under the guidance of Bordeaux-based oenologist Michel Rolland, Marianne Wine Estate produces rich, nuanced food wines that are delicious when young, and age incredibly well. The name celebrates the fictional character who personifies the French Republic and its ideals: Liberty, Fraternity and Equality, qualities that sum up Lady Anne’s ahead-of-their-time ideas.

16 June: Waterkloof Wine Estate
All wines produced at Waterkloof emphasize restraint, elegance, integrity and length. Waterkloof aims to produce “honest wines” that express the estate’s unique location on the slopes of the Helderberg. Waterford is famous for its Wine and Chocolate tastings – will we see chocolate on the menu with the Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon or Natural Sweet wines?

30 June: Paul Cluver Wines
Grapes take their time to ripen up here in the cool-climate Elgin terroir of the Kogelberg Biosphere, a Unesco World Heritage Site. And the results are worth the wait, which eliminates bitterness and lends rounded suppleness to tannins. It has always been a land of richness, judging by Lady Anne’s delight at a meal she enjoyed here: “Hide your diminished heads all ye French Cooks … never no never was so good a pye tasted.”
