Soettand by Koelsoem Kamalie & Flori Schrikker
Lapa Publishing has recently produced a couple of very exciting cookery books written by two Cape Town Ladies who are really Kaaps monikered Koelsoem Kamalie and Flori Schrikker. You would search a long time finding names more Cape in nature.
The ladies are regular broadcasters on Radio Sonder Grense on an afternoon drive programme called Tjailatyd [Finish Work Time]. Their tested recipes are shared across the company. They are both experienced home cooks and are each day involved in the life of their Bonteheuwel Community.
Their first book Kook saam Kaaps won a Gourmand World Cookbook award. Edouard Cointreau, Founder and President of the Jury of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards said of the book, ‘this is a book with magic, bringing back local recipes which are family secrets from grannies on the Cape Town area.’

Both books, especially their latest, are a collection of recipes. Steamed Doekpoeding, a cloth wrapped dessert, upside down tarts, Malay Koesisters, Ginger Pudding and Hertzoggies all feature.
