Villiera Bush Vine Blanc Fumé 2016

On the Villiera Estate there is an old bush vine Weather Station clone of Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes produce a serious wine from a small yield.

Pour
Elegant label design. Gem bright pale gold in the glass. I loved the ‘clean’ flavours, grapefruit, green pepper, figs and piel de sabo melon. Lovely brush of well applied oak.

Pair
Excellent food wine, perhaps best with charcuterie, smoked salmon, angelfish or trout.

Philip Jonker Brut ‘Entheos’

From Robertson and made up of a blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir. The grapes were hand-picked and pressed in whole bunches. For the second fermentation, the wine was matured on the lees for 18 to 24 Months.

Pour
Classical livery on the traditional Champagne shaped bottle. Pale straw in colour with a rushing of the tiniest bubbles to the top of the glass. Creamy lemon curd nose with fresh baked brioche and sliced fresh pear. Touch of green winter melon and a whiff of smoke on the long ending.

Pair
Perfect as a mid-morning refresher, and goes well with the ubiquitous oysters, smoked fish, sushi, sashimi and creamy goat cheese salad.

Graham Beck Game Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

From Rooiberg Cellar on the road from Worcester to Robertson. Grapes from a variety of wine appellations. Destalked, crushed and fermented with 4 pump overs per day for soft tannin and colour extraction. Spends 12 months in 1st, 2nd and 3rd fill French oak barrels.

Pour
Elegant bottling in a Bordeaux shaped bottle with a picture of the Cape Leopard on the label. Deep Satsuma Plum at the core which pales out to garnet at the rim. Vibrant red and black berry fruits, with blackcurrants to the fore. Sappy and cream with well interwoven tanins on the long and gently waning aftertaste.

Pair
This is a fine wine at the braai. It loves red meat, casseroled, grilled pan-fried or roasted. Chill it slightly for greater appeal.
