Groot Constantia Barrel Cellar
Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are the white grapes of Bordeaux and make some of the finest white wines in the world. Successfully blended in other parts of the wine world. In Western Australia, it is hugely popular.
The Groot Constantia Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2016 is a blend of the two varieties from different vineyard blocks on the estate and grown on Hutton and Clovelly soils. The blend is made up of 53% Sauvignon Blanc and 47% Semillon.
Sauvignon Blanc ripening in the vine
Once harvested, the grapes were separately vinified. In the cellar, they were given a light pressing and then allowed to cool ferment in stainless steel tanks in order to retain varietal integrity and freshness. Four months of lying on the lees built up the mid palate and the creaminess of the wine. The wines were then blended and prepared for bottling.
Semillon Grapes ripening on the vine
It looks like
Bottle under cork in a Burgundy shaped bottle with the Constantia logo embossed just below the neck of the bottle. This indicates that the grapes used in the wine are from the Constantia Wine Appellation. In the glass, the wine is a pale golden straw with yellow green flashes.
It smells like
Fresh and generous fruit. Granadilla, piel de sabo melon and fynbos herbaceousness.
It tastes like
Juicy sappy fruit found in the nose is repeated on the palate. Nice full middle palate. The frisky freshness of the Sauvignon Blanc is ameliorated by the gravitas of the Semillon which adds a serious anchor to the wine. Clean refreshing long aftertaste.
