Boland Cellar Reserve No 1 Chenin Blanc Wooded 2015
For over 75 years, Boland Cellar has sat in the foothills of the iconic Paarl Mountain facing eastwards. With their grape growers placed in five different micro climatic conditions, they have a host of grapes to draw on to make their sublime wines. Some special vineyard blocks are watched over and carefully farmed by their team of viticulturists in order to create award winning wines.
Boland Cellar has been a website partner with us for some years and I have found it very exciting as they have simply improved their wines year upon year, creating niche ranges of premium wines and keeping up with their general and entry level ranges.
Chenin Blanc Bush Vine in Spring
The Boland Cellar Reserve No 1 Chenin Blanc Wooded 2015 is a superb expression of the Chenin Blanc grape. The vines from which they come are mainly old bush vines which have little or no irrigation. Planted on shale soils, cooler with a high clay content, with cooling afternoon breezes off the Benguela Current influenced Atlantic Ocean, the grapes have a longer hang time and this process creates greater flavour and aroma in the final wine. Ripe white fleshed peaches, sweet tropical limes, guava, melon and fynbos herbs.
Chenin Blanc ripening on the vine
The grapes are hand harvested and brought quickly to the cellar where they are destemmed and crushed with no skin contact. The free run juices are taken to stainless steel tanks for early fermentation. Later, the fermenting juice is racked to French oak barrels for further fermentation and maturation for a year. Batonnage takes place every fourteen days for a 7 month period. This builds up creaminess and a bolder mid palate.
It looks like
Bottled under a cork closure in a Burgundy shaped bottle with elegant new livery. In the glass it is a pale golden straw colour, gem bright with flashes of lime green.
It smells like
Classical Chenin whiffs. Tropical fruits, sweet tropical limes, white flowers, fynbos honey.
It tastes like
The fabulous fruit in the wine is supported by clever application of oak. The long lees contact has added texture to the wine, a creaminess and different flavour layers.

It’s good with
Chenin Blanc is a very food friendly wine. Particularly chicken, gentle Kerala curries, Oriental foods, and Italian dishes like risotto and aubergine baked with parmesan cheese. Alida Ryder’s Greek Feta & Phyllo Pies with Honey and Oregano are the perfect pre-meal snack and work so well with this Chenin. Click here for her recipe.
